Valley of Fire State Park (1 Hour from Las Vegas)

Rv parked at nevada rv hidden gems fire with friend hiking

Quick Facts:

Drive Time: About 1 hour northeast of Las Vegas
Road Profile: Easy drive on well-maintained highways. The route from Las Vegas follows I-15 North to NV-169 (Valley of Fire Highway), which features gentle rolling terrain with no extreme grades. This is a high-capacity route that’s fully RV-safe.
Why It’s Great: Nevada’s oldest state park delivers red Aztec sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and some of the most photogenic rock formations in the Southwest. It’s close enough for a spontaneous weekend but feels worlds away from the Strip.
Best time: October through April (summer temps regularly exceed 110°F)
Connectivity: Cell service (Verizon) is spotty, often limited to one bar due to the surrounding sandstone. Starlink performs excellently here thanks to the open desert environment and clear northern sky views, making it ideal for remote work.
Campground: Atlatl Rock Campground is your best bet for modern conveniences. It offers water and 30/50-amp electrical hookups, making it easy to run your AC during warmer months. The campground features a dump station with water fill at the entrance (individual sites don’t have sewer connections). Arch Rock Campground offers a more rudimentary experience with no hookups but provides excellent wind protection among the sandstone formations

Day-by-day highlights:

Day 1: Arrive mid-afternoon, set up camp, catch sunset at Fire Wave or White Domes
Day 2: Morning hike to Mouse’s Tank petroglyphs, afternoon exploration of Elephant Rock and Arch Rock, evening stargazing
Day 3 (if staying 3 nights): Scenic drive through the park, photography at Rainbow Vista, pack up and head home by early afternoon

Cathedral Gorge State Park (2.5 Hours from las Vegas)

Quick Facts:

Drive Time: About 2.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas
Road profile: Safe, straightforward route on U.S. 93 (Great Basin Highway). The highway climbs from the Las Vegas Valley to Pahroc Summit at 5,000 feet, but the grades are designed for commercial traffic and are very manageable for RVs. Wide, straight roads with a 70 mph speed limit.
Why It’s Great: Narrow slot canyons you can walk through without permits or crowds. The bentonite clay formations create cathedral-like spires and caves perfect for exploration and photography. This is one of the most visually stunning parks in eastern Nevada.
Best time: March through May and September through November
Connectivity: Verizon service is functional but can be weak near the clay walls in certain areas. Starlink performs exceptionally well with no sky obstructions, delivering speeds up to 18 MB/s. Perfect for remote work or streaming. The park also offers limited Wi-Fi, though Starlink is the preferred option.
Campground: The main campground features electrical hookups (50-amp available), making it easy to stay comfortable year-round. The sites include picnic tables, grills, and shade ramadas. Clean restrooms with flush toilets and coin-operated showers are open year-round. Many sites are perfectly sized for Class C RVs, offering shade and easy maneuvering. Some sites are available through ReserveNevada.com, while others remain first-come, first-served.

Day-by-day highlights:

Day 1: Arrive afternoon, set up camp, explore Miller Point overlook for sunset and initial overview of the gorge
Day 2: Full day hiking through slot canyons and caves, pack a lunch and spend the entire day exploring different sections
Day 3 (if staying 3 nights): Morning photography in the best light, final cave exploration, pack up and drive home
